Box Office: "New Year's Eve" Dethrones "Breaking Dawn"


Welcoming a newcomer to the top spot for the first time in the past month, "New Year's Eve" founf itself perched atop the box office over the weekend of December 9-11, 2011.

The star-studded Garry Marshall directed "Valentine's Day" followup pulled in $5.5 million on Friday while expected to garner a total of $16 million during its opening weekend of release.

Situated in the runner-up slot is a fellow theatrical newcomer "The Sitter," as the Jonah Hill fronted comedy caper nabbed $3.5 million during its first day of release while trending towards an approximate $9 million weekend take.

Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated weekend totals were last weekend's frontrunner "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" ($7 million), followed by family film "The Muppets" ($7 million) and the highly-acclaimed Martin Scorsese film "Hugo" ($6 million).
